• The long‑running Colorado State Fair takes place annually in late August in Pueblo, dating back to the first horse exhibitions in 1869. It’s a hallmark of Pueblo’s agricultural and industrial heritage.

• The Eden train wreck occurred near Pueblo on August 7, 1904, when a flash flood destroyed a bridge, dragging 88 people to their deaths and injuring hundreds more.

• During the Mexican–American War, in August 1846, Colonel Stephen W. Kearny’s U.S. Army of the West camped along the Purgatoire River near present‑day Trinidad before proceeding through Raton Pass to occupy Santa Fe unopposed on August 18.

• A devastating gas explosion in the Bowen Town coal mine, located about six miles north of Trinidad, claimed the lives of 13 miners. It stood as one of the worst mining disasters in Colorado at that time and spurred several mining strikes.
